How do modern Egyptologists determine what ancient people ate, what ingredients went into their perfume, or what their clothing looked like when only bits and pieces of the original objects remain? This four-part online course explores everyday objects used by ancient Egyptians, including the materials they were made from, how they were made, and their cultural and symbolic importance. We will work together as Egyptologists to gather diverse puzzle pieces using artifacts from the Penn Museum’s own collection, ancient recipes, Egyptian myths and tales, and evidence from settlements, mines, factory, or production areas. We will also look to experimental archaeology and even biographical stelae from within ancient Egypt to its outer periphery of Nubia, the Sinai, and ancient Rome to build a complete picture of how the Egyptians made the objects of their world.
